A guide to our trademarked terms

How do we come up with our silly tech terms? It's simple: we trademark unique technology that takes us beyond chips-in-a-box or follow-the-datasheet designs. Stuff like this:

Analog Tech

Nexus™: our unique, perfectly-balanced, 100% discrete, current-feedback amplification stage. Nexus does it all: it converts single-ended to balanced, balanced to single-ended, and gives you both balanced and single-ended output. With Nexus, you don’t have to worry about balanced, single-ended, whatever—it handles everything for you.

Continuity™: our proprietary output stage that solves the problem of transconductance droop and transistor mismatch. Or, to put it simply, it makes an amp act like Class A, even if it’s gone beyond its Class A capabilities. The result? Better sound, more power, less heat.

Coherence™. Our unique, fully discrete topology for melding tube and transistor, without any input caps, interstage caps, or output capacitors. Capacitors have a great ability to mess with your musical purity, so we throw them out whenever possible. Enjoy Coherence on Lyr and Vali.

Halo™. This is the motion feedback system incorporated into Midgard and Aegir 2. Basically, it includes the transducer (AKA, your headphones or speakers) into the feedback loop, so there are potential measurable acoustic differences compared to non-Halo products. As in, there can be potential distortion reduction. As in, distortion reduction that matters on a 40dB SINAD transducer, rather than a 110dB SINAD amp.

Equipoise™. This is our horrible name for a high-linearity, no-feedback, ultra-simple, single-stage gain stage used in Freya, Skoll, Saga 2, Mjolnir 3 and other products. Basically, instead of tons of feedback (which may sound bad), we use high voltage and distortion cancellation to achieve very good performance without feedback. Very good is defined as “better than any CD in theory, and wayyyyyyyyyy better than any CD in reality.”

Digital Tech

Unison USB™. The world’s only proprietary audio USB implementation designed 100% for a single mission: to transport UAC2 audio, in as perfect a form as possible, to your DAC. Unlike the canned “dessert topping and floor wax” solutions used by almost everyone else, Unison ensures ultimate fidelity.

True Multibit™. Our proprietary combination of a unique time- and frequency-domain optimized digital filter using math nobody else is using (no, seriously, this is not something you can select from 10,452 options on Filter Of The Month Software Club oversampling software), plus deep multibit integrated DACs (we’re talking 16-20 bit actual depth, not 3-5 bits like typical delta-sigma stuff). Ever wonder why Schiit DACs are known for deep, natural imaging and timbre? Our filter is why.
  • Megacomboburrito™. This is what Mike calls our proprietary time- and frequency-domain optimized, unique-math digital filter. This took many person-years of time to define in the 1980s and 1990s, and many person-years of time in the 2010s and 2020s to extend to our products.
  • Multiform™. This is a new take on True Multibit, taking advantage of the characteristics of multiplying DACs using a completely different analog stage. Mike Moffat said it offered a “30-year maxima in audio wood.” Yes, this is offensive. Yes, we understand. Relax. This is audio, not firefighting or healthcare.
Mesh™. This is our proprietary combination of our comboburrito filter (now running on a 32-bit Microchip processor) and a standard delta-sigma modulator. The result? Something that sounds much like our True Multibit or Multiform DACs, but at a much lower price. Also, something not “off the shelf,” but more “top shelf.” Have fun with that!

Forkbeard™. Simply the only multi-product, multi-stack integrated remote system—which, oh yeah, also displays data that no other audio company can give you, like where your system runs out of headroom, and also allows you to access deep
functionality such as EQ, volume, and loudness on digital devices—without a single login or account creation. Reject silly smart home crap and use Forkbeard! Your spouse, kids, and, hell, everyone will thank you!
